Technical Observations

The Global Potable Water Shortage

 

Introduction

Water of earthly ‘potable and pure’ quality is a vulnerable earth surface re-cycle-product. The world is ‘running out’ of potable water (a supply locally available fit for drinking and food supply preparation without further processing and stringent [microbe removal] disinfection). Environmental habitat of re-cycle water replenishment is being destroyed, removed or impaired by civilization. Man’s contemporary habits worldwide create permanent destruction of earthly fresh potable water replenishment quality with his cities, dams and widespread surface upset by plowing, flooding, mining, building and paving. Man is thus responsible for an increasing irreversible potable water shortage extending around the globe. The basic physical functions of the re-cycle process for our global home supply, being evaporation, condensation, filtration and disinfection, are now being eliminated as consistently as is the horrendous consumption rate. Chemical or biological poisoning add to the loss of supply balance, due to worldwide abuse by man. Man is indifferent to disposing poisonous waste into the ocean, river and lake that eventually reaches the ground aquifer. Thus, as we destroy natural physical potable replenishing process for the earthly home, we poison what is held for us in the ground.

Forward for Man, Backward for Water

Man is rapidly becoming totally without natural earthly potable water replenishment forces where he lives in anything but the rain forest (now being removed at several locations on the globe) at his handling waste indiscriminately. His inattention to world affect of his waste management is a global-wide habit, .e.g., polluting our rivers and waterways with bio-waste.

Waste management now is man made manifold complex challenge to his bio-safety, and healthful co-existence with the microbe world. Apparently, the general public is not aware of waterborne microbe treachery, which kills, maims or infests the body with worms with abandon after extreme intestinal havoc requiring extended and expert hospital sleuthing before treatment can begin.

Waste disposal methodology is a health mandated responsibility affecting all on this planet sooner or later. Any person capable of reading – or listening, cannot be unaware of the dimension of this problem, or can escape observing, or hearing about the growing earthly shortage of this element health value in their water table along with a change forthcoming in their country’s water habits. Regional conflict amounting to war exists over water now.

Water carried through pipes is potable only when the source is potable (unless a disinfection process is added to the piping). All but relatively few private wells are usable as once were thousands of pristine lakes and streams and what was safely stored in underground caves, (the aquifer). All ground drinking water presently must be tested and/or treated to make it anything but microbial or chemical intake risk.

In New York City and Chicago and many of the shoreline cities of the U.S. the rivers and canals run ugly-colored by chemical content of regional surface water – now sufficiently destroyed to prevent use of that water entirely for anything but washing the streets (where it will be delivered back into the poisoned supply through storm sewers as there is no other choice). Most of this water quality now finds its way back to underground havens of the past.

Already major evidence of microbial disaster lurks in the country’s entire water supply. Milwaukee’s death and water-parasite illness toll a few years back evidence a fault potential for public water supply microbial disinfect method. Entire cities (New York an excellent example) run on reservoir supply, piped from miles distant to multi-million populated areas and thousands of building circumstances.

The Perch and Smelt fish run no longer up to the beach shoreline of Chicago as we have killed off the necessary water elements for survival. What was the beautiful Lake Michigan water supply for the entire city has been sadly forsaken – as the steel mills to the south have used it as a dump sufficient to cause murky surface lines seen from the airliner, in the surface water drifting northward to the 3-mile offshore water intake pump-buildings. Sourced poisoning and putrification originate from northern Indiana since the early nineteen forties and is added to with sewage outlets rimming the western shore, and has rendered the water unsafe without very severe gallon by gallon treatment with Chlorine – a corrosive compound basic to secondary harmful chemistries. Events such as this are found everywhere, and bound to become increasingly common in many communities and cities in this country, if not already at that quality devastating level. Similar cause may be responsible for bacteriological accidents within the past year in the food supply - a microbial problem that either began in off-shore packaging, field water affecting the packer and shipper water quality at shipment – or in the food plants or harvest package wash in either country. shippers’ terminal in the farmlands, as there is no identity to date of the process failure associated with poisoned tomatoes, or rinse water disinfection routine , either at the shipper-grower or the receiving or shipper processing plant.

These recent illness outbreaks of Salmonella and E coli are as yet from undeclared cause – but it is known that ground water typically used to rinse off field tomatoes (or Peanuts) ordinarily do not knowingly carry these microbes. However, ground water run-off in the customary rinse water agribusiness zone supply, e.g., is contaminated water not for use in the packaging process. Overall, water used in contact with any produce must be at the water-microbe-removal standard that has become mandatory, whether of foreign origin or locally grown field produce. High quality wash and preparation water sources in the food industry can be assured by contemporary disinfection process as with today’s water supply equipment and prove to be both economically proficient and less costly to all in the final purpose of food intake – as a discipline continued throughout any food packing, bottling or rinsing. Disinfected water is as critical a need in food and drug preparation as is hand scrubbing and sterilized clothing of and by the surgeon. Hand washing is no less a mandate for food handlers than it is for healthcare workers.

Recently, a prestigious New York hospital had signs throughout its entire campus warning of Legionella risk in their fountain water. This type of event may readily occur with increased frequency and intensity in non-U.S. No building is water safe today without its own microbe removal system – no matter the location or metro size.

Countries further along the progression ladder of industry and commerce are more dependent on water recovery methods as an essential to that commerce but are not without special measures need to assure water microbe and chemical safety, building by building.. The lesser nation economies with barren lands and little industry, are already out of potable water distribution in terms of daily need. Many areas of Europe have been without potable water for over a century. Thus, the biggest global water recovery abuse machine remaining is found in highly functional industrial countries’ continuing assault on the cyclic supply. These conclaves of human industry are perilously close to future troubled waters, and total absence is already a factor. Man’s pursuit of unavoidable (or ambitious) fetes typically create water supply losses as he mismanages water bound needs in community/industrial expansion to global economic dominance. From ancient tier farming to his 100+ storied buildings every progression man has achieved in his numbers and industry has had an affect on water quality of supply and quantity, from the Roman Aqueduct forward to the Aral Sea and Boulder Dam.

Never mind global warming whatever the cause; man is more directly and immediately threatened by the decreasing water bank account held for his ‘3-day-maximum-without survival essential for anyone on the globe. Man’s global residency ‘progress’ is the analog of a potable water drought expanding each and every day, every hour. Elephants in Africa die for lack of water. Large scale regional or an entire country’s potable water shortage is no longer surprise. Potable quality loss is the end of the dream supply when water recovery habitat or pollution process advance on the natural replenishment habitat are destroyed, whether it has taken a thousand years or a few years. Globally, the result of mining and industrial waste tailing, power oriented diversion and enormous population (urbanization) growth and multi- billion acre farming water ‘shuffling’ from re-cycle havens emphatically disturb the global potable water supply and its normal facility for the potable recovery process of nature. Wanton pollution of sewage and drainage run-off, has now occurred for decades from the Rhine, by the Hudson and the Great Lakes and by the Illinois, Missouri and the Mississippi and the Colorado to continue on in other continents with abandoned national caution, the Yellow and Yangtze in China, the Nile, the Tigris, the Mekong, the Ganges, the Euphrates, the Jordon, the Danube, Rio Grande, Columbia. All are the center of waterborne debate, re-engineering proposal, aquifer supply and affect uncertainties with international consortium concern, of financial and critical immediacy to the arenas of commerce, farming and welfare or warfare. In some instances hundreds of acres are cemeteries with livestock corpse monuments, consequence of water source destruction by interposing water needs. Other nations’ supply have created moribund continued political and economic testimony to the condition of potable water shortage conflict area impact and world surface replenishment failure to do what it has been doing for millions of years.

Global Water Emergency

With water supply failed or failing, boundary sources rage about the globe. Agri-business failure such as the tragedian man-made loss of the Aral Sea paradise in the earlier Soviet Union that changed a healthy orchard countryside into a haunted salt marsh, example water fields being deserted as a political as well as an eco-system problem. There are thousands upon thousands of local results of prior sufficient eco-system fresh water replenishment now destroyed and gone by man’s indifference in the last century. Continued habits are now coming out of the ground as deadly threats to the world’s socio-economic balance.Any regime, monarchy or republic and all of society otherwise will remain as desperately fragile societal failure without daily fresh potable water intake supply for man and beast, and as quickly as the problem ceases to be one of choice.

Unfortunately, man has ignored the summary water need for tomorrow believing he co-exists in a world sea of endless supply. His demeanor has been creating a vague global potable water future for any worthy global, national or regional service. Conversely, with the greatest need for water, a growing nation is likely to be leading the rate of replenishment loss, e.g., be a leading cause of water supply reduction rate. Man’s economic forces are eliminating the natural re-cyclic properties of the global water paradise man inherited, and for the last century he has had a mindless willingness to proceed without recognition of critical commensurate moves to protect the global water quality and quantity as his varied land uses ignore tomorrow’s potable water need. Rather, he mechanized an assault on the overall problem of waste management and potable losses. Such abandoned understanding by socio-political leadership appears common to all of mankind wherever he lives, unless he is already unable to have sufficient potable water availability in his land . At the other extreme, man’s urbanization is addictive to the paving out of existence the waterways, grassland plants and wetlands, as nations share the hapless dumping into the oceans and destruction of forests and wetlands. Even the rain forests around the mid-section of that globe are being removed. All nations on our earth home play some destructive role in ancient aquifer system losses. The aquifer is nature’s prior conservation miracle and replenishment care of man’s need of a quality supply of potable water. Clear-cutting, mining techniques, water diversion and shuffled use for farming billions of acres are now combined world wide with the disposal of raw sewage and storm sewers into waterways linked to underground supply and potability loss. In modern societies including the U.S., improper community zoning to make way for a few dozen or hundreds of new structures, has crowded out virgin grassland, truck farms and small dairy farms of meadow and shade trees that had been so prevalent around metropolitan areas of every state until mid twentieth century.

These precious ground cover so suitable to earthly process are a key to regional water recovery. Ground-cycle fields of millions of acres are replaced today by pavement, concrete slabs, roofs and foundations, driveways and highways rimmed by concrete culvert ‘built-ins’ that carry toxic oil-laden run-off into the local storm sewer and into the aquifer, or more directly into virginal streams and the aquifer. Homes and malls are outlined by fertilizer and weed killer grass pads (beware - weed killer will destroy mature hardwood trees over 60’-90’feet tall) Our waste sewage is found to hold not only typical organic waste but surviving therapeutic drug compounds in that bodily waste finding their way into the underground water reservoirs of the earth This predicament is sufficient to the extent that lactating mothers are cautioned.

As oiled water cannot easily evaporate into the atmosphere, it more readily transports toxic chemicals into local meadows and streams, and by volume alone can upset the water quality for flora and fauna – and potability, for hundreds of square miles in coherent community melding– no more difficult a result to understand than the mandated removal of underground fuel oil tanks. These are a threat when there is leakage. Determined to be destroying water quality affecting dozens of homes sharing the same underground aquifer/well supply by a single tank offender is a community event, as damage to area home potable supply may occur for dozens of acres around that leak.

The treachery of water mistreated is illustrated by the fact that Arsenic is no longer a compound element used in embalming as it has been traced in underground waters enjoined with cemeteries somewhere distant from the point of draw or use.

Presently, fresh potable water supply is a diminishing asset that will not meet the needs of the world if changes are not implemented now. This vital element critical to all planet life, is a constant survival absolute of planet reality that cannot change.

Farming alone in some regions of the globe have created global water salination of area greater than a state in the U.S. A critical absence rate of potable regional supply caused by unchanging respect for this problem, will grow to effect shut down of commerce, industry and the populace health prospect. If prudent measures and useful methods are not used now. where that prospect is quite clear, water will increasingly become a singular health and commerce factor as it already has to some degree on every continent. Entire portions of global industry and food supply are affected now by the absence of effective water source environment care correction. Simplistic routine of mankind commerce and industry affect our global water supply leaving complex future problems to health and that industry survival – or man as he attempts to survive within affected areas of that commerce and industry.

Summarily, the contamination of potable water in the aquifer begins on the surface. In the U.S., the shopping mall macadam paved parking space, the roadways and the community and industrial, institutional meccas and all the structures thereof, have replaced the natural earth potable water recovery essentials of safe water flow into the aquifer or well. Grass and ‘slow drainage’ evaporation fields in the billions of ground water hectares, with ponds and virginal aquifers have disappeared. These critical essentials require earth face to the sky-earth scheme of things natural to enable the evaporation re-cycling process. The replenishment provisions of trees and run-off streams earlier pleasantly melded with neighborhood parks and quaint ponds and streams, have been poisoned. Clean ponds and rivers earlier nestled by natural clean shores, pretty river banks laden with neighborhood flora and fauna, are no longer. What natural water drainage remains is co-existing with waste and/or storm sewer outlets and leaking building foundations and chemical bleeding of local or intensely massive industry and commerce mini-cities discharges into our water run-off. Any gas station, Mall, parking lot, boulevard filled with shopping centers are water recovery method absentia while polluting ground water to the level of toxins sufficient to kill plant and animal life within miles of the compressed efforts at commerce and convenience.

City-adjacent rural areas itself has increased a thousand-fold in the absence of ‘truck farming space that extended around early twentieth century metros like Chicago, Des Moines and Fairfield and has been replacing what used to be ‘rain water’ purity, but now carries petrol by-product chemical waste and thus into the precious cyclic fouling essential to potable supply replenishment. Creeks have become highway ditches, canal waterways are used for waste or storm water disposal (and have been for a century). Community or country parks, camping or picnic serenity grounds are bottle and garbage collection accounts for massive compactors on wheels, and delivered to seepage havens we call the dump – where nothing including plastic sheets will purify the flow of rain water through to the underground supply, or be a hold-back of the microbe or certain toxic elements found there in high concentration. In the U.S. and elsewhere around the world, man’s toying with power needs, flood control (traditionally created by earlier toying) interference by dams, levees, chemical and pollutants wholesale discharge of billion-acreage farming water diversion by country quartering of ancient river basins is a worldwide contemporary assail. The power gulper and hungry but indifferent foolhardy resident species man has abandoned the virginal aquifer concept with fertilizers, drug remnants in his bodily discharges poorly managed as waste, and little attention paid to the loss of his vital needs by Man’s disregard in his industry ambition, for an element structure upon which life itself on this globe is entirely dependent. He does not hesitate to tear at his ambitions, in spite of repeated revelations as to the ultimate cost tomorrow of excessive short-sighted modification of millions of farm acres without a plan. Supply disturbances are not met with adequate compensation to the task, creating deliberate future loss. Damming is the ultimate insult to an eco-system and where the water quality/quantity is plentifully mistreated. Artificially contrived supply volumes by moving rivers and spreading cities approach acts destitute of clear, fair or humane thinking, not for today, but for tomorrow’s result.

Man must look to water ‘recovery’ today, if he is to survive. He must invest in advance methods of re-use, expand his source such as to de-salinate sea water when and where he can – or he must, take immediate and effective disciplines to drastically reduce the factors that are destroying surface water quality with microbial and chemical poisoning. He must act to preserve, and use available water more intelligently:

(1) by protecting the supply, utilizing conditioning standards of use and protection, wherever and whenever possible to effectively expand his supply. Preservation/conservation approach dynamics must be worthy at a minimum equal to consumption rate, to the volume needs for potable water.

(2) By putting a global end to the potable water slaughter by utilizing strenuous in-situ water disinfection process with lightweight bulk volume handling techniques proven to excel what is achieved in the community water treatment plant as potable, to bring water quality for potable consumption now before a world frozen by an ugly water problem.
